Optiemus Inaugurates India’s First Tempered Glass Manufacturing Plant in Noida

Optiemus Infracom, a leading Indian electronics manufacturer, has inaugurated the country’s first tempered glass manufacturing facility powered by Engineered by Corning™ technology in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. The plant was inaugurated by Union Minister for Electronics & IT, I&B and Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw.

The facility, set up with an initial investment of ₹70 crore, will produce 25 million units of tempered glass annually in its first phase and generate direct employment for over 600 people. In the second phase, Optiemus plans to scale production capacity to 200 million units per year with an additional investment of ₹800 crore, creating more than 4,500 direct jobs.

India, now the world’s second-largest mobile phone manufacturer, has seen its electronics production cross ₹11.7 lakh crore in FY24-25. Despite this growth, tempered glass—an essential accessory for smartphones—has largely been imported. Optiemus’ move is expected to reduce reliance on imports and strengthen domestic capabilities.

The Indian market for tempered glass is estimated at 500 million units annually, valued at nearly ₹20,000 crore, while the global market is worth over USD 60 billion.

Industry Leaders Speak

Ashok Kumar Gupta, Chairman of Optiemus Infracom, said:
“This is a landmark moment for the Indian electronics manufacturing industry. Our vision is that every Indian smartphone user should have access to BIS-certified, Made-in-India tempered glass. With this facility, we are building global-scale capabilities to serve both domestic and international markets.”

Pankaj Mohindroo, Chairman of the India Cellular & Electronics Association (ICEA), highlighted the employment potential:
“Tempered glass manufacturing is highly labour-intensive, offering a tremendous opportunity for India to not only meet domestic demand but also emerge as a leading exporter. This initiative will support MSMEs, create large-scale jobs, and boost India’s electronics exports.”

The state-of-the-art plant is equipped with advanced machinery and processes including scribing, shaping, chamfering, polishing, dual-stage rinsing, chemical tempering, coating, printing, and lamination. Each step will undergo stringent quality checks to ensure world-class products.
