Ecoreco Expands E-Waste Recycling Capacity with New Lithium-Ion Battery Facility Near Mumbai

In a significant move to strengthen India’s formal e-waste recycling ecosystem, Ecoreco, the country’s leading e-waste management company, has announced the expansion of its recycling capacity by 18,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA). The company has also established a dedicated 6,000 MTPA lithium-ion (Li-ion) battery recycling facility in a newly built 40,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art plant located in the industrial hub of Vasai, near Mumbai.

This strategic investment comes in direct response to the E-Waste Management Rules, 2022, which mandate producers to fulfill Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) targets via the centralized EPR Portal. The introduction of Environmental Compensation (EC) penalties for non-compliance is expected to further accelerate formal sector participation and industry growth.

Importantly, the entire expansion — including land acquisition, building, plant, and machinery — has been financed through internal accruals, reaffirming Ecoreco’s status as a zero-debt company. The absence of interest or EMI obligations positions the company with enhanced financial resilience and operational flexibility, offering a competitive edge in a rapidly evolving sector.

The newly commissioned Li-ion battery processing facility is a forward-looking addition at a time when India is witnessing a surge in battery waste from consumer electronics and electric vehicles. This development is expected to curb pollution from informal recycling practices, promote environmentally sound processing, and support producers in meeting their EPR targets.
