Mumbai, June 9: Afcons Infrastructure Ltd has secured a ₹5,301-crore contract from Vadhvan Port Project Ltd (VPPL) for the construction of a 10.14-km breakwater at the upcoming Vadhvan Port in Maharashtra.
The company said it received the letter of award on Monday for the marine infrastructure project, which, upon completion, is expected to become the second-longest breakwater in the world.
The contract marks one of the largest marine engineering orders for the Shapoorji Pallonji Group flagship and further strengthens its position in the ports and marine infrastructure segment.
Krishnamurthy Subramanian, Executive Chairman of Afcons Infrastructure, said the project underscores the company’s expertise in executing complex marine infrastructure works and would support India’s ambition of emerging as a global maritime hub.
“It is a testament to Afcons’ proven capabilities in delivering large-scale and technologically challenging marine projects. The Vadhvan breakwater project will be a strategic enabler for India’s aspirations in global trade and maritime infrastructure,” he said.
Managing Director S. Paramasivan described the project as one of the world’s landmark marine developments and said its successful execution would reinforce India’s capabilities in handling complex infrastructure projects.
Vadhvan Port, being developed in Maharashtra, is envisioned as India’s largest public port and among the world’s largest container ports. The facility is expected to have a cargo handling capacity of 23.2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), significantly enhancing the country’s maritime and trade infrastructure.
Afcons has executed several major marine projects in India and overseas, including the bulk jetty at the Port of Sohar in Oman, the New Owendo International Port in Gabon and the sulphur jetty project in Kuwait.
According to Engineering News-Record (ENR), the Mumbai-headquartered engineering and construction company is ranked as the eighth-largest marine and port facilities contractor globally. The company operates across 31 countries spanning South Asia, Africa, the Middle East and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.
The ₹5,301-crore order is expected to provide a significant boost to Afcons Infrastructure’s order book and strengthen its presence in India’s fast-growing maritime infrastructure sector.
