Shyam Metalics and Energy Ltd., a prominent player in India’s metal industry, has unveiled
plans to diversify into the rolling stock segment with a cutting-edge greenfield wagon
manufacturing facility in Kharagpur, West Bengal. The project marks a major milestone in
the company’s five-year capital expenditure roadmap and aligns with the Government of
India’s “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.
The new plant will be developed through Shyam Metalics’ step-down subsidiary, Ramsarup
Industries Ltd., and is scheduled to begin operations by March 2026.
Key Highlights:
- Production Capacity: The Kharagpur facility will be developed in two
phases—initially producing 2,400 wagons per year (about 8 wagons per day), with
eventual expansion to 4,800 wagons annually. - Product Range: The plant will manufacture a diverse array of rolling stock, including
Flat, Open, Box, Hopper Covered, Tank, and Specialised Wagons. - Sustainable Design: The facility will incorporate rooftop solar installations, a
residential colony, and recreational amenities, emphasizing employee welfare and
environmental responsibility. - Technology and Layout: Featuring a world-class “Uni-Flow” manufacturing layout,
the plant aims to streamline operations and maximize production efficiency. - Indigenous Focus: Reinforcing the “Make in India” vision, the facility will utilize
domestically manufactured equipment, promoting industrial self-reliance.
Strategic Location and Integration
Situated with direct access to two National Highways and proximity to a major port, the
Kharagpur facility is strategically positioned for seamless logistics. It will benefit from Shyam
Metalics’ integrated infrastructure, including captive power generation, an operational railway
siding, and internal supply of structural and stainless steel from the company’s flagship steel
plant.
Leadership Perspective
Commenting on the development, Mr. Sheetij Agarwal, Director of Shyam Metalics and
Energy Ltd., said,
“With our foray into wagon manufacturing, we are reinforcing Shyam Metalics’ vision of advancing India’s industrial self-reliance through high-impact, future-ready infrastructure. From harnessing rooftop solar energy to deploying Made-in-India technology, each element of this facility is designed to optimize efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and enhance employee welfare.”
Long-Term Vision
The Kharagpur facility forms a cornerstone of Shyam Metalics’ long-term strategy to expand
beyond core steel production into high-growth sectors. The move supports national
infrastructure development goals while advancing the company’s environmental, social, and
governance (ESG) commitments.
By entering the wagon manufacturing space, Shyam Metalics not only diversifies its portfolio
but also takes a significant step toward becoming a comprehensive provider of steel and
mobility solutions for India’s rapidly evolving infrastructure landscape.
