Bhogapuram and the Economy of the Eastern Corridor

In the previous article, we looked at why Visakhapatnam and the general Vizag region needed a larger airport. But an airport of this size and scale also raises another question: why Bhogapuram in particular? Here’s a dive into the geographical significance of the city and whether Bhogapuram can potentially become an Eastern logistics gateway.

The location

Bhogapuram’s location is potentially significant beyond its proximity to Visakhapatnam. It sits in Vizianagaram district, north of Visakhapatnam, placing it within the broader North Andhra economic geography rather than simply serving the Visakhapatnam urban area. This matters because the government’s current regional development strategy highlights strengthening the Visakhapatnam Economic Region, while linking airport infrastructure with highways, rail, ports, semiconductors and other industries.

Also, the East Coast Economic Corridor (ECEC) is India’s first planned coastal economic corridor, running along the eastern seaboard. The Visakhapatnam-Chennai Industrial Corridor (VCIC) is its first phase. The aim (beyond factories and industries) is to create an efficient multimodal transport network, supported by infrastructure and logistics, to integrate businesses with global supply chains. The East Coast Economic Corridor was also conceived as a way to integrate India’s eastern industrial clusters with Southeast Asia and East Asia, with improved shipping and air connectivity that integrates domestic suppliers into regional production networks.

The airport also forms part of a larger coastal infrastructure picture. At the August 2026 inauguration, the government highlighted plans to modernise existing ports from Visakhapatnam to Krishnapatnam, along with the development of new ports at Mulapeta and Ramayapatnam. It also cited development of new highways, including the Visakhapatnam-Raipur Expressway, and major railway investments. The airport will boost the regional logistics system, serving different kinds of cargo. Bulk goods and containers may move by sea, while time-sensitive and high-value cargo may use air freight.

Economic activity beyond the airport

Economic activity and the benefits of the new airport extend beyond the terminal itself. The official website of the ASRI airport (Alluri Sitarama Raju International airport) describes an integrated development around the airport, with a 154-acre Aerocity, 139-acre township, and a 500-acre Aviation Hub. The purpose is to cater to aviation, MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul), manufacturing, and logistics industries. APADCL, the Andhra Pradesh government-owned airport development corporation, has also listed planned components of the Bhogapuram aerotropolis, including:

  • Aviation-linked manufacturing
  • Aircraft MRO facility
  • R&D centres and test labs
  • Multimodal logistics
  • Exhibition and conference centres
  • Leisure and entertainment
  • Aviation education and training facilities

Bhogapuram wasn’t built with the hope that economic activity would follow — it has been designed to develop an aviation-linked ecosystem alongside it.

Who stands to gain?

There are two main segments that may gain from the new airport. The first, industries that benefit from an airport-linked economic ecosystem. And the second, industries that manufacture products that are shipped via air or use air freight.

Beneficiaries of the airport ecosystem include businesses like warehousing, freight forwarding, trucking and regional transport, cargo handling, specialised packaging and customs-related services. The airport itself boasts of a 5000 sq m cargo terminal with planned cold-chain facilities for pharmaceuticals, seafood and other perishables.

The beneficiaries of air-freight are narrower, because not every product manufactured in and around Bhogapuram needs to be shipped via air freight, but there’s certainly potential. Air cargo generally makes the most sense where speed, perishability, value or supply-chain urgency justifies the higher cost. For example:

  • Seafood and perishables: Speed and cold-chain infrastructure are crucial
  • Pharmaceuticals: High-value products that may require temperature-sensitive shipping
  • Electronics/semiconductors: High-value, time-sensitive components
  • Manufacturing: Urgent components and spare parts
  • E-commerce: Faster distribution
  • Aerospace and MRO: High-value and time-sensitive components

Seafood, pharmaceuticals and other perishables are particularly well-supported by the airport’s actual cargo plans since they are mentioned as target areas for cold-chain facilities.

Another business segment that could benefit is electronics and semiconductors, because of the wider Visakhapatnam economy. At the Bhogapuram inauguration, the government linked the airport’s development to a new semiconductor project in Visakhapatnam and its push towards advanced technology industries.

So, if Bhogapuram eventually develops sufficient direct international or hub connectivity, it could potentially shorten parts of the supply chain. But if cargo still has to be routed through another Indian airport, the advantage may be more limited.

More than a replacement airport

Bhogapuram has the infrastructure and a strategic location that makes it more than a replacement for the old Visakhapatnam airport. It sits within a region being connected through industrial corridors, ports, highways and new manufacturing investments, while its own development plans extend beyond aviation into logistics, manufacturing and commercial infrastructure. But, whether Bhogapuram becomes an economic gateway to the East will depend on what follows: the industries that choose to use it, the airlines willing to add capacity, the cargo volumes that can be built around it, and the network of logistics, manufacturing and service businesses that develops beyond the airport itself.
