In a major boost to India’s railway manufacturing capabilities, Jupiter Tatravagonka Railwheel Factory Pvt. Ltd. (JTRF), a subsidiary of Jupiter Wagons Limited, has acquired land in Haldiapada, Khordha, for setting up the country’s first private-sector forged railwheel and axle manufacturing facility.
The upcoming plant represents a landmark investment of ₹2,500 crore, to be executed in phases under the Invest Odisha initiative. The project, developed with support from Invest India and IDCO, is expected to transform Odisha into a strategic hub for heavy engineering and export-oriented rail infrastructure manufacturing.
Key Highlights:
- Location: Haldiapada, Khordha district, Odisha – 30 km from the Bhubaneswar Airport
- Investment: ₹2,500 crore
- Production Capacity: 100,000 forged wheelsets per year
- Export Focus: 50% of output to be exported, primarily to Tatravagonka A.S. (Slovakia) and other European clients
- Operational Timeline: Commercial production expected by 2027
The land has been secured from the IDCO land bank, complete with statutory MOEF clearances and an undisputed title. The Khordha industrial corridor, where the plant is located, has been specially curated by IDCO to attract global-scale industrial investments.
Strengthening India’s Railway Ecosystem
Speaking on the development, Mr. Vivek Lohia, Managing Director, Jupiter Group, said:
“The land acquisition in Odisha marks a critical milestone in our commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat. By establishing this facility, we are not only enhancing India’s capacity to meet its own rail infrastructure needs but also positioning the country as a competitive exporter of forged railwheel and axle components.”
The facility is poised to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs in Odisha, fostering economic development in the region. With a strong focus on cutting-edge technology, the plant will manufacture components that support high-speed and high-load rail operations, reducing India’s dependence on imports.
A Step Toward Global Rail Leadership
This will be the first such plant in India’s private sector and one of the few globally with integrated capabilities to produce forged wheelsets on a large scale. Nearly half the production is aimed at global markets, opening doors for Make in India components to play a bigger role in European and global railway networks.
With this investment, Jupiter Tatravagonka is not only addressing a critical gap in India’s railway manufacturing sector but also reinforcing India’s emergence as a global hub for rail infrastructure innovation.
